How to Prepare Your Site for a Smooth Construction Dumpster Rental Delivery

Before your construction dumpster rental arrives, you need a clear path, a level spot, and a driver who already knows where you want the container. A little work in the days before will keep everything running smoothly.

How to Prepare Your Site for a Smooth Construction Dumpster Rental Delivery

Clear the Space

Remember that you’re clearing space for the truck as well as for the container, because the driver has to back in, raise the bed, and set the box down. In general, plan for these measurements:

  • For a 15-yard roll-off: 8 x 12 x 5 feet
  • For a 20-yard roll-off: 8 x 22 x 4.5 feet
  • For a 30-yard roll-off: 7 x 22 x 6.5 feet

Keep the approach open from the street entrance to the spot where you want the container. The driver will struggle to make the turn if there are gates that swing inward, cars along the curb, trailers, or piles of material in the way, so walk the route and move anything that could be an issue. Don’t forget to look up before you settle on a spot. The bed of the delivery truck rises while the driver sets or retrieves the dumpster, so a wire or limb that wouldn’t be a problem for a parked car could be a big issue for that raised truck bed.

Check the Ground

Put the container on ground that can hold the loaded weight. If it sinks too much, the truck may not be able to pull it out later. Choose stable ground that’s free of rocks, tree roots, and other hazards. Most of the time, a driveway, a compacted gravel pad, or a concrete slab will be the best choices. When you have to use a paved drive you want to protect, lay plywood under the rails to protect it.

Get Permits If Necessary

Windsor’s right-of-way occupation permit covers temporary placement of trash dumpsters in the street, and the item has to sit fully in front of your property, within seven feet of the gutter, clear of the travel lane, and clear of the sidewalk, with reflective cones at the corners. If you block a sidewalk, a fire lane, or a hydrant, you create a hazard for pedestrians and emergency vehicles. You’ll usually be able to avoid any permit if the dumpster is placed entirely on private property, however.

Communicate

Before we arrive, be sure to tell our dispatcher which entrance to use, which side of the building you want the box to face, and whether you will be there to point out where to go. If you will be away, leave written instructions and a phone number someone will answer during the delivery window.
