Program created to give mobility to young children with physical and developmental disabilities
A universal truth among all children – Kids just want to have FUN!
The GoBabyGo program was started in 2008 by Cole Galloway, a physical therapy professor and infant behavior expert at the University of Delaware, who identified a need to help young children with mobility challenges explore their world and interact with other children.
In the U.S., more than half a million children under the age of 5 have difficulty moving due to physical disabilities, developmental disabilities or otherwise. Many of these children are eventually given electric wheelchairs and medical devices to increase mobility.
The premise of GoBabyGo – Retrofit motorized toys to meet the special needs of kids who are still too small to benefit from the use of wheelchairs.
Moving and playing with other kids leads to happiness, forming friendships, and learning for everyone involved, according to John Koshy, a doctoral student with the program.
On Saturday, November 12, 2016 a local GoBabyGo event was held at Windsor High School which unveiled the work of local teams and allowed children in the community to test drive their new racecars.
The vehicles were designed by collaborative teams to fit each child. Each team consisted of members from Windsor High School STEM Warriors, Sage Park Middle School students and Central Connecticut State University faculty and students, as well as representatives from local businesses with expertise in design and engineering.
The results – Heartwarming.
“Selecting a charity to partner with is a very personal decision for me,” said Denise Cance of Windsor Sanitation, “When I read the brochure from Windsor High School regarding a donation towards retrofitting a motorized car custom made for a child with special needs, I knew right away this charity would be one I would support wholeheartedly.”
“After attending the event and watching all the young kids smiling faces and pure excitement to drive their new cars, I am motivated to do more” Cance continued. “Bringing joy to these children is an easy decision for me, I will make a donation for three cars next year.”
Windsor Sanitation – dedicated to our community.
